KINSMAN, Robert, had a house lot of one acre, granted to him near where the South Meeting-house now stands in 1637. He was commoner, 1641; one of Major Denison's subscribers, 1648;  a commoner entitled to a share in Plum Island, 1664. He died January 28, 1664. His will is dated January 25.  He left a son and five daughters:

Mary, wife of Ursual Wardwell.

Sarah, wife of Samuel Younglove.

Hannah.

Martha, wife of Jacob Foster.

Tabitha.

 

He also mentions Isaac and Sarah Ringe, children of his daughter Mary, minors;  and his cousin, Richard Nichols.

He purchased, June 7, 1642, of John North, a house and lot on the south side of the river.

Also, a planting lot upon the Neck, near Labor-in-vain, so called.

In 1638, Richard Lumpkin sold unto John Tuttle one house lot lying near the great cove of the town river, having Robert Kinsman's house lot on the north west.  On this Lumpkin house lot, was a dwelling built by Richard Brown; and sold by Brown to Mr. Richard Saltonstall; and by Mr. Saltonstall sold unto the said Richard Lumpkin.

 

Robert Kinsman 2, son of. Robert 1, has the title of Quartermaster. He 'was appointed to that office in 1691, to a company of which Thomas Wade was Captain, and Samuel Ingalls Lieutenant.  He had one and a half shares in Plum Island, &c. in 1664; was a voter in town affairs in 1679. He came into full communion with the church, Feb. 22, 1673.  Freeman, March 31, 1673-4; selectman, 1675; tithingman, 1677. Had horses on the common, 1697. Seat appointed to him at the table in the meeting house, 1700. It is recorded :

"1674, March 31. Mr. Jo: Rogers, Mr. Sam'l Cobbitt, Robert Kinsman, Tho: Clarke, Daniell Hovey, Abra : Fitts, Joseph Goodhue, Joseph Whipple, Phile: Dane, James Day, being admitted to the freed of the Colony, took the freeman's oath.”

Quartermaster Robert Kinsman was fined and imprisoned for opposing the arbitrary measures of Sir Edmund Andros in 1687. At a town meeting holden Dec. 28, 1704, it was voted to give Nathaniel Rust, jr., two acres of land by his house in Chebacco, up ye hill, -which land is accepted in full satisfaction for ye loss and damage ye sd Kinsman sustained under Sr Edmund Androse Government.

Previous to this the town took measures to make reparation to some of those who had been imprisoned:

"24 Dec. 1689, voted yt mr. wise & ye Selectmen draw up ye Townes abuses with respect to ye Rates taken, and ye Calumnies cast upon ye Towne and psons have suffered by ye late Gour'mt in Sr. Edmd Andros his rule, psent I them to ye Towne next lecture day after Lecture."

Quartermaster Kinsman sent in the following petition : Ipswich, March 14, 1692-3. Gent'n & ffriends: my Requst is that you would be pleased to consider me something for my loss that I met with at Boston about five or six years agoe. As I am a townsman make your cause mine; and I doubt nott you will stirr up your hearts to pittie & merice, so that you will be willing to contribute something to my loss that I have sustained thereby. I have long been patient. I pray let not that hinder me, but be pleased to doe for me as you have for others In ye Like Case, and so I Rest Your Faithfull Friend and Servant.

The response to this petition is on record :

Voted and Granted: That whereas there was many sufferers with quarter master Rob't Kinsman, In ye like maner if the money Raised by Selling Incroachments be over and above what the town hath already promised, that it shall be divided proportionably amongst those sufferers, that have not been yett considered until their Loss be In Some Measure made up as others have been.

 Robert Kinsman married Mrs. Lydia More of Boston, April 4, 1700.

Mr. Robert Kinsman had the sixteenth lot of eighteen feet, laid out between Samuel Ordway’s shop and ye Town Bridge, beginning by ye Bridget and so by ye River side : March 23, 1692-3.

In 1699, he subscribed eighteen shillings towards the bell. His gravestone has the record of his decease:

Robert Kinsman 3, probably son of Robert 2, married June 28, 1705, Rebecca daughter of Cornett Andrew Burley. They had a daughter who died at fourteen years:

A son Robert was baptized May 3, 1713.

Robert with Rebecca his wife, in consideration of Ł60, acquit unto their brother Andrew Burley, all share in the estate of their father, Cornett Andrew Burley, February 8, 1718-19.

 

Thomas Kinsman 3, (Robert 2,) and Elisabeth had a son:- 

Thomas, born April 3, 1693.

Mary, born October 14, 1695.

 Thomas died soon after the births of his children. His widow, Elisabeth Kinsman, and Isaac Ringe published their intention of marriage.

1701, June 12, Elizabeth Kinsman, widow and administratrix of Thomas Kinsman, exhibits an account,.in which she charges: “For schooling three children, viz: Steven, Eliz'h, ThoS.  Mary's maintenance five years ye 15 July. For Tho's Ditto three & halfe.  For Eliz'h Ditto two year.  For Steven 11 weeks Ditto & 3 years Clothing."

1701, June 30. Elizabeth Rindge, wife of Isaac Rindge, alias Elizabeth Kinsman, guardian of Elizabeth, daughter of Thomas Kinsman, under fourteen years of age;  Mary, under fourteen years of age;  Steven, thirteen years of age: or thereabouts, &c.

 

Joseph Kinsman 3, (Robert 2,) and Susanna, had:
