    LORD, Katherine, widow. Was a commoner, 1641. 

    Robert Lord 1, took the freeman's oath at Boston, March 3, 1635‑6; was one of Denison's subscribers, 1648; had a share in Plum Island, &c., 1664; was a voter in Town affairs, 1679.

    1645. He was on a committee with Richard Saltonstall, Daniel Denison, Samuel Appleton, Richard Jacob, John Payne, empowered to grant houselots to the settlers.

    1639. He had a houselot on High street, next east from Mr. William Bartholomew; which property yet remains a possession of his descendants. [1847.]

    He was Town Clerk, and Clerk of the Court, and Register of Deeds, for many years,—till his decease in 1683.

    He was selectman, 1661, and many years after.

    He was Representative in 1638.

    He died August 12, 1683, in the eightieth year of his age. His will is dated June 28, and was proved September 25, 1683. In the will he mentions his wife, Mary, "with whom by God's good providence we have lived comfortably together in a married condition almost fifty three years." He bequeathes to her all his estate during her life.

    His wife was Mary Waite, whom he married, 1630.

    In an account book, under date of 1660,he mentions his "sister ffitt."

    He gives legacies to his eldest son, Robert 2; to his daughter Sarah Wilson; to his sons Nathaniel 2; Thomas 2, who removed to Charlestown; Samuel 2, who removed to Charlestown; to the children of his daughter Chandler, deceased, viz: Mary, William, Joseph and Samuel; to his daughters Susannah Osgood, Abigail Foster, Hannah Grow (wife of John Grow,) and to his grandchild, Robert Lord 3.

    His houselot on High street was granted to him February 19, 1637. It adjoined the homestead of Mr. Humphrey Vincent.

    Robert Lord 2, son of Robert 1, married Hannah Day. He had a share in Plum Island, &c., 1664. He was a voter in Town affairs, 1679. He was one of twenty-four of "the young generation," who joined the church by taking the covenant, between January 18 and February 1, 1673. He was Marshal of the Court, as early as 1669; and is usually designated as Marshal Lord.

He died November 11, 1696; and left a widow Hannah, who possessed the rights of commonage, and had horses on the common, 1697. His sons were:

Robert Lord 3, son of Robert 2, born December 26, 1657. In 1697 his name is on a list of such as have horses on the common, and at this date he has the title of Serjeant. He subscribed, 1700, toward "procuring a bigger bell for ye good of ye Town." He was one of the Selectmen, 1707.

He had a son, Samuel 4, who had a son Samuel 5, who married and removed to Dunbarton, N. H.

 

He married Abigail Ayers, June 7,1683. Children:

    Robert Lord, jun'r, had the fourteenth lot between Ordway's shop and ye Town Bridge,—eighteen feet front, granted to him March, 1692-3.

    James Lord 3, was born in Ipswich, Mass., in 1737, and died in Litchfield, Maine, February 13, 1830. He served in the French and Indian Wars three years, and in the Revolutionary War four and one half years. He held the commission of First Lieutenant, given to him soon after the battle of Lexington. It was signed by John Hancock, President of the Senate.

    Lieut. Lord had command of his Company at the battle of Bunker Hill. He was wounded in the right thigh at the battle of Long Island, July ~7, 1776; and was ever after lame, from the effects of the wound. He was put on the Pension Roll, March 30,  1818.

    Lieut. Lord came to Litchfield with his family in 1788. He lived on the farm afterwards owned by Hon. Samuel Smith. He was prominent in town affairs, and was a member of the Board of Assessors of the plantation of Smithfield, during its existence.

    The wife of Lieut. Lord was Elizabeth Brown, born in Windham, Conn., March 1, 1742.  She made the journey from Windham to Ipswich, on horseback, to be married. The wedding day was August 7, 1762. She died in Litchfield, July 21, 1831.

    Lieut. Lord's grave is in the burying ground in the Grant neighborhood. No stone marks this resting place of the Old Soldier.

James Lord 4, son of Lieut. James Lord 3, came to Litchfield with his father. He served in the Revolutionary Army with his father. He died February 16, 1847.
