Anne Bradstreet

The First American Poetess

1612-1672

Ann Bradstreet was the daughter of Governor Dudley and was born in England. She married Simon Bradstreet at the age of sixteen.  She came to Ipswich in 1635 when she was twenty three.  She lived in Ipswich for eight or nine years before moving to Andover.  During that time she was quite prolific. She lived for awhile on High Street near the end of Mineral Street. Her poems which were very popular in her day, being sold even in England, were of a type that would be popular today. Below are a few selections of some of her poems.
